RYA Powerboat, RYA Motor Cruising Practical Courses in Port Solent and Portsmouth - 1st Sea School

There are two basic levels or paths of training depending on your type of craft:
Small light craft  (up to 10m)
Larger craft (over 10m ) (24m)

RYA Powerboat craft courses are normally based on two day courses. This is around 50% theory and 50% practical.

The RYA Powerboat level 1 & 2 course covers those subjects that will give you the confidence to be safe afloat.

The RYA Powerboat Intermediate course & RYA Powerboat Advance course take you that bit further in your understanding knowledge and skill. Including bad visibility and night passage work.

You can also be awarded the ICC 10m, personal watercraft, CEVNI (Inland Waterways licence) - this is a requirement for European inland Waterways (short written test), Cruising courses,  Helmsman,  ICC 24m,  Day Skipper, Yacht Master Coastal, Yacht Master Off Shore.

Time to put your theory into practice or move onto the next level.

Upgrading to a larger boat, planning to charter on holiday - these courses will show you the skills needed to safely move a lager boat from port to port and mooring safely at the end of the day.

RYA Helmsman and the ICC 24m are based on two days tuition 50% Theory 50% practical

Covering  the subjects that will give you the confidence to be safe afloat.

RYA Day Skipper takes you to the next level and is a good foundation for Yacht Master courses

Although it is not a requirement to have completed your theory prior to practical training, over the years it has proved to be a far better way of doing it, as there in not much time to teach/explain both the theory and practical in the time periods given.

The course is based on 4-5 days depending on your experience, covering longer passages than you may have covered during Basic Helmsman, there will also be a night navigation phase as an introduction to night passage making.

After discussions held with the RYA Chief Instructor Cruising the following training schedules are excepted.

You can do the theory course online, but we do not run online courses.

If you have already successfully completed your theory (can produce a certificate) the practical  course will be 4 days.

If you have part completed your theory (no certificate) then you can do a Theory Revision / Practical  course 4-5 or if required 5-6 days.

Should you wish to combine both the theory and practical courses in full, each course cut back by one day will be 8 days in total.

RYA Yacht Master, Coastal and Off shore. 6 days

As by the name it’s a far more intense level, the Coastal is the entry level into the commercial world and you may wish to take the commercial endorsement on exam day.
Yacht Master Off shore will give you the confidence to make those cross channel or longer coastal passages day or night.
Due to the length of the courses we are happy to brake this down into two sessions however its always better if you can complete in one go.
Yacht Master exam days are conducted by an independent examiner on the last day of the course.
